Texas Medicaid covers weight-loss drugs but not GLP-1s.
KFF lists Texas among seven states that report covering one or more weight-loss drugs while covering no GLP-1s at all. That distinction catches people out: a weight-loss benefit in the plan documents does not mean semaglutide or tirzepatide is on the formulary. Texas is the largest state on KFF's list of programmes covering a weight-loss drug while covering no GLP-1, which makes it the single biggest population affected by that particular distinction. It also sits in the South, where adult obesity prevalence runs at 34.5% regionally — so the gap between what the benefit appears to offer and what it delivers affects a lot of people.

What to do in Texas: When you call, name the drug. 'Does Texas Medicaid cover weight-loss medication' and 'does it cover semaglutide' are different questions with different answers.
Coverage for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea is mandatory everywhere, so a refusal framed around weight loss is not the end of it — and on Medicare, the $50 programme starts 1 July 2026 regardless of which state you are in.
Paying cash in Texas
Providers are licensed across all 50 states and charge the same here as anywhere, so there is no local price to hunt for — the cheapest verified all-in rates are Ozari Health at $86 for semaglutide and Trimi at $125 for tirzepatide. Does Texas Medicaid cover Wegovy or Zepbound?
KFF lists Texas among the states covering one or more weight-loss drugs while covering no GLP-1s. Since Wegovy and Zepbound are both GLP-1s, a weight-loss benefit does not get you either of them for obesity.
